Vol. 11 Summer Lethargy

When you think about diseases in the summer, you would think they are caused by heat, but actually, they are often caused by cold, because we have more contact with cold due to refrigerators and air conditioners. In addition, our body has resistance to heat in the summer, but our resistance to cold at this time is weak. Today I would like to talk about points of life to prevent diseases during the summer time.

We need calories to keep our body temperature up, but in the summer, the outside temperature is high, so we don't need to consume as many calories. Therefore, we don't need to eat any high calorie foods. Also, if you drink a cold beverage, your body has to warm up this liquid to match your body temperature. This leads to your feeling hot. So it is recommended to take light food and warm (more than your temperature) beverages in order to keep your body feeling cool.

In the summer we tend to lose salt by sweating. This causes summer lethargy. So try to include salt in your meals. Also, Ume-sho-bancha explained in Vol. 9 is very effective in preventing summer lethargy. Drink it hot twice a day.

If you don't have an appetite, you can put some spice in your meals, but too much spice can become a cause of diarrhea.

If you are in a cold air conditioned place for a long time, keep warm by wearing more clothing including socks.

As I said in the above, our body has a strong resistance to heat in the summer. So bathing is recommended more in the summer. If you sweat by bathing, this will get rid of waste matter and you will feel cooler later.
